Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
