The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
