A minimum of 13 individuals perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
